Darfur rebels deny clashes with RSF in Nertiti
Conflicting reports of fighting in West Jebel Marra
The Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdelwahid al-Nur has denied that it fought with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) earlier this week in Nertiti in Central Darfur.
The two groups, which have an uneasy, unofficial truce, battled in Nertiti from December 23-24, witnesses told Radio Dabanga: “The fighting led to dozens of deaths on both sides and among citizens, and a large numbers of civilians were displaced to the heights of Jabal Mara,” the stronghold of SLA-AW in Central Darfur.
“Witnesses confirmed that clashes between the support and the movement stopped on Monday after both sides agreed to form a committee to deal with the matter.”
NASA FIRMS satellite data show fires around the former UNAMID compound in Nertiti on December 25, and in the Guldo area north of Nertiti (13.1358, 24.133).
