Déby replaces security chief as fighting escalates near Chad-Sudan border
Reshuffle coincides with Chadian leader's return from the Emirates
Sudan’s civil war is deepening latent divisions within the fragile regime of Chadian President Mahamat Déby, whose late father Idriss Déby was deeply involved in the previous war in Sudan’s Darfur region, a 17-year conflict that spilled over into Chad.
The younger Déby, who ascended to the Chadian presidency in controversial circumstances after his father’s death in battle three years ago, claims to be neutral in Sudan’s war, but his policies have helped the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in key ways.
