The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have responded to a speech made by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (“Hemedti”) two nights ago, September 4, by escalating their attacks in Omdurman over the past two days.
Unlike previous bouts of fighting in Omdurman in early August and early July, this fighting is farther to the west and north, and the RSF are on the offensive, not the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF). Hemedti’s soldiers have pressed north from the Popular Market into residential areas including Al Thawra blocks 22, 23, and 29.
In an audio recording Tuesday, the RSF leader called on his troops to fight to the death and claimed that victory was near. He spent most of his 20-minute speech attacking Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the commander-in-chief of the Sudan Armed Forces, who has embarked an international tour since leaving the frontline last month. Hemedti seemed particularly angered by a speech made by al-Burhan in Egypt in which he said the RSF were guilty of war crimes.
