Map: The RSF Takeover of West Kordofan
Tracking the Sudanese army's losses in West Kordofan, 2023-2025
The fall of a Sudanese army base in Babanusa yesterday concludes a nearly two-year siege. It is the latest in a series of defeats sustained by the Sudanese Armed Forces in West Kordofan since 2023. This map shows army garrisons that have fallen into RSF hands, along with the date of capture of each.
Combat operations in West Kordofan State may now cease or slow down, apart from airstrikes. RSF troops involved in the siege of Babanusa could be redeployed to South Kordofan or North Kordofan.
Over the past week, fighting has erupted in the eastern jebels of South Kordofan, and west of El Obeid in North Kordofan. SAF has been building up troops in North Kordofan and White Nile in preparation for new operations against the RSF. Key objectives for SAF include breaking the sieges of Kadugli and Dilling, securing the main highways between El Obeid and the Nile Valley, and resuming the westward push toward An-Nahud.
Meanwhile, a new mass recruitment drive by the RSF and SPLM-N in South Kordofan has stirred unrest, On Sunday, a SAF drone struck a village in South Kordofan where the SPLM-N was carrying out training exercises. The attack caused both military and civilian casualties.
